It obtained its shape from a crucifixion, where people who violated the laws of ancient Rome were often executed. But it was originally taken from Carthage and spread by Phoenician colonists, who also used the crucifix as an instrument of execution. The word itself is an interpretation of the Latin term crux, denoting such an instrument of execution. The deprivation of life by crucifixion, to which Jesus Christ was subjected, was carried out only for thieves by Roman governors. However, Christian believers of that era were also oppressed by Rome and executed similarly. The cross was used in religion long before our era. There are mentions of it in written monuments from Egypt, China, and other famous nations. The cross was a symbol of the unification of the four main elements. It was later represented with equal sides. For example, in ancient India, the jars used to collect water from a sacred river were marked with a cross, and in China it appeared on temple lanterns. The long necklace is elaborately crafted with White Natural Pearls, cultured in freshwater. The entire necklace was handmade with a knot after every pearl. The thread is a silk-cotton blend. The clasp is 925 silver. In this cross, the shaft and the crossbar are perfectly split in half. Other names include the Eastern Cross as used by Christianity in these regions and also the Equilateral Cross. It is a cross formed by four arms of equal length crossing at right angles. Typical of Byzantine art, it alternated over the centuries with the Latin cross as the basis of church layout. Its four equal arms and the ability to fit inside a square make the Greek cross an idealized cross representing the Divine nature of Christ. This was the cross of early Christianity until the Renaissance, after which Latin crosses were used in Rome. It is still used in Eastern Europe and in parts of the Orthodox Church. Although its name suggests it originated in Greece, that is not the case. The Greek cross appears in the East thanks to Christians who lived in these territories. The cross was based on the Immis cross on which Jesus died, but with a shorter shaft, giving it a symmetric aesthetic so it could be seen from any direction. It is believed that the use of this cross in the East was influenced by the True Cross, which was located in Jerusalem. Helena of Constantinople, also known as Saint Helena, dedicated her life to finding the relics of the True Cross (the cross on which Jesus was crucified). Around 326, she went to Jerusalem to investigate its location. She finally said she found the place where the true cross and Jesus’ tomb were located. Her son Constantine then built a church at the same site where an ancient temple once stood, erected to Venus (Roman) or Aphrodite (Greek). This church was known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in the area of the old city of Jerusalem. Having found the cross on which Jesus died, Saint Helena cut off the lower part of the Cross (about a fifth of its height) and sent it to Rome as a relic known as Lignum Crucis. She left the remaining cross in Jerusalem, which, when cut, took the form of a Greek cross. The Greek cross was also part of the Byzantine Empire’s flag: a yellow Greek cross on a red background. The meaning of the Greek cross is protection and balance due to its symmetrical shape with arms of equal length. It is also believed to be a representation of God, while the Latin cross, as we know it, is an image of the crucifixion of Christ. This is open to interpretation, as we have seen, since the origin of this cross is tied to the birth of the Christian cross.
