ashville, Tennessee. Bank of Tennessee. 1861 $500. PCGS Currency Very Fine 20. Post Note. No. 131. Plate A. High-denomination Obsoletes from Nashville are always a treat to be had. This example which represents a Post Note on the Bank of Tennessee is a particularly attractive piece that feels out of place for something issued during the 1860s in visual and technical terms. Here one may observe a penned date of "Sept 1 1861" placing its issue a few months after Tennessee succeeded from the Union while even circulation can be observed. Very likely this piece survived due to the circumstances of the conflict which claimed countless banks in Tennessee and throughout the Southeast. PCGS Currency comments "Small Edge Tears and Repairs." Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
