The bas-relief named 'Enlightenment' is designed in the Art Deco style and based on the historic reliefs by the American sculptor Rene Paul Chambellan (1893–1955), originally created on commission for the Chanin Building in New York. CHANIN BUILDING The Chanin Building was built in 1929 by Irwin Salmon Chanin (1891–1988). Chanin rose from the humble son of an immigrant family to a successful architect and developer through his own efforts. With the building that bears his name, he wanted to express everything New York City meant to him and can mean to anyone who chooses to seize opportunities and pursue success. In the building's lobby eight monumental reliefs were placed above ornate bronze screens. Collectively, these works carry the theme 'New York, the City of Opportunity', in which four mental qualities (vision, courage, enlightenment, achievement) and four physical qualities (activity, effort, endurance, success) are central for the individual who strives for growth and the attainment of success. ATELIER LAURIER DESIGN The object offered in this auction has been designed and crafted with great care by Atelier Laurier Design. Based on all available photos and historical sources, this highly detailed reconstruction has been produced. Each component has been meticulously worked out to capture the elegance of the original reliefs. LIMITED EDITION The bas-relief 'Enlightenment' in this auction is part of a limited edition.
