Mysia, Pergamon. Ca. 310-282 BC. Diobol (Silver, 11.14 mm, 1.28 g). Obv: Head of Herakles to tight, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: ΠΕΡΓΑΜ. Archaistic Palladion: statue of Pallas Athena standing facing, holding spear in her right hand and shield in her left. Reference: SNG Copenhagen 319. SNG Paris 1559-66. Pergamon rose above the fertile Kaikos valley in Mysia, its commanding citadel providing a natural stronghold. From a modest settlement, it developed into a major centre of power, trade and Greek culture. Its coinage expressed civic identity through images of gods and heroes, while its strategic position drew it into the ambitions of rulers competing for control of western Asia Minor.
