Born at Lirrunnga, she was closely associated with Wanarn, where her artistic practice drew upon her knowledge of the surrounding landscape and its cultural significance. This painting depicts the Kungkarrangkalpa (Seven Sisters) Tjukurrpa, an important ancestral narrative that travels across vast areas of the Western Desert. Mirra Cook Yurtiwa illustrates the sisters' journey through the Country surrounding Wanarn, following their travels along the creek towards Warakurna and continuing east to Docker River. The Seven Sisters story is one of the great ancestral narratives of the Western Desert, connecting communities and significant sites across an extensive network of songlines. Through her depiction of this journey, Cooke records the enduring relationship between ancestral beings, the landscape and the cultural knowledge embedded within Country. As the artist explained in Wanarn in 2006: "I been born Lirrunnga. Ngaanya (this painting), is about Seven Sisters (Kungkarrangkalpa) in the Wanarn area. The sisters went to Warakurna by that creek and then to Docker River." © MYRA COOK YURTIWA / Copyright Agency, 2026
