MULLIGAN (Therese) & WOOTERS (David), eds. — 1000 Photo Icons. George Eastman House Cologne, Taschen, 2002. Large 8vo, publisher’s illustrated photographic hardcover, 766 pp., very extensive black-and-white and color illustrations. Editors: Therese Mulligan and David Wooters. Texts by William S. Johnson, Mark Rice, and Carla Williams. French translation by Sophie Rabau and Frédéric Maurin. Your copy is the French edition exclusive to Maxi-Livres, printed in Italy, ISBN 2-7434-4331-6 (978-2-7434-4331-3). The copyright for this edition is indeed dated 2002, while the original Taschen edition was published in 2000, as indicated by the photographed colophon. The bibliographic records confirm that the book has 766 pages. It is a particularly comprehensive overview of the history of photography, drawn from the collections of the George Eastman House. The book largely follows a chronological progression and brings together approximately 1,000 photographs, ranging from the earliest 19th-century processes to contemporary photography. Its appeal lies above all in the extraordinary variety of the works reproduced: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and ferrotypes; documentary photography; portraiture; pictorialism; avant-garde movements; social photography; fashion; photojournalism; and contemporary research. The photographed pages feature, in particular, works by Edward S. Curtis, as well as 19th-century American photographs. It is therefore more than just a “coffee-table book”: it serves as a concise visual dictionary of the history of photography, with captions and commentary accompanying the works. The bibliographic references accurately describe it as a comprehensive overview of the George Eastman House collections. This copy is in very good overall condition: sturdy hardcover, well-preserved red spine, clean and fresh interior. A few minor surface signs of wear on the cover, with no apparent serious defects.
