Shiva Mukha-liṅga in bronze, Southern India/Deccan, 18th–19th century Head of Shiva intended to cover the linga (mukha-liṅga), made in a copper alloy by lost-wax casting and finished with a burin; hollow interior flare for insertion onto the stone linga, base with a stepped profile. The face, serene and gently stylized, bears a frontal tilaka, elongated ears with kuṇḍala, a beaded necklace and a high jaṭa-mukuta headdress incised in a lattice pattern. Residues of pigment and ritual concretions attest to use in a sanctuary during abhiṣeka. The typology—small frontal covering of the linga with pronounced features and incisions—is characteristic of workshops in Southern India and the Deccan between the 18th and 19th centuries. A devotional object of strong intensity, conceived to “animate” the non-iconic shaft of the linga with the presence of the divine face during domestic rituals. Condition: generally good with signs of use, ritual encrustations and a flaw at the edge of the base that does not compromise the allure of the bronze. Patina consistent with age.
