MUGHAL STEEL SHIELD (DHAL)

Ca. 18th century AD A steel shield of rounded form with a pronounced central boss, densely engraved and chased with fine floral and geometric motifs. A large central medallion is encircled by radiating roundels and vegetal scrolls, with four domed bosses set on scalloped floral bases arranged symmetrically around the centre. The outer edge bears a continuous frieze of cusped arabesques and rosettes within a serrated border, enclosing floral sprays in symmetrical formation. The reverse retains rivet holes from the original arm straps, now missing. Size: 470mm x 70mm; Weight: 2.61kg Provenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
