Montesquieu & MM. Desttut de Tracy / Müller - Œuvres de Montesquieu - 1826-1827

A fascinating representative set documenting the reception, at the beginning of the 19th century, of one of the great political, historical and philosophical thinkers of the Enlightenment — Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, appears there through a highly varied body of work that combines political reflection, analysis of laws, philosophy of history, critique of mores, historical studies, literary writings and meditations on society — The foundational text of this collection is naturally De l’Esprit des lois, first published in 1748, a vast inquiry devoted to the relations between laws, institutions, mores, climate, religion, economy, traditions and forms of government — Montesquieu seeks to understand why institutions differ from one people to another and rejects the idea that a political system can be considered independently of the historical and social conditions in which it operates — Montesquieu & MM.
