Native American, Mississippian culture. A large hemispherical bowl of shell-tempered clay, its walls rising from a rounded base to a sharply everted rim, the dark grey surfaces burnished inside and out to the smooth, slightly lustrous finish that defines Bell Plain ware. The lip is the prize: deeply notched with long slanting grooves that read, at a glance, as a length of twisted cord laid around the mouth, with a beveled interior edge behind it. This treatment is the Haynes Bluff rim mode, considerably scarcer than the plain lips that finish most Bell Plain bowls. Vessels of this scale served communal food preparation and presentation, and comparable examples recur in mortuary deposits, so a funerary role for this piece is possible though not demonstrable. Bell Plain is one of the workhorse ceramic types of the Mississippian world, defined by a fine, finely crushed shell temper and thoroughly smoothed surfaces, usually firing to grey or grey-brown. It appears across the Mississippian sequence but reaches its greatest frequency in the Middle and Late phases, when it dominated household assemblages of the central Mississippi Valley. Bowls are the single most common Bell Plain form, which makes the rim treatment here the distinguishing feature rather than the vessel shape. The Haynes Bluff mode, named for the Mississippi site where it was first isolated, is a decorative grammar rather than a separate ware: the rim flares abruptly from a rounded lip, the interior face is beveled and often terraced or incised, and the lip itself is cut with deep, oblique notches. The visual result, a rope or cable encircling the vessel mouth, translates a cordage motif into clay, and its comparative rarity within the enormous Bell Plain corpus makes rimmed examples of this kind sought after by collectors of Southeastern ceramics.
