Mirror - Wood, Glass - Venetian gilt-wood mirror in 18th century style

Impressive large giltwood mirror in the Venetian 18th-century manner, dating from the early 20th century. The mirror has an exceptionally decorative architectural silhouette, centred by a high pierced crest composed of radiating foliate elements and flowers. Below, vigorous opposing C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, floral motifs and shell ornament surround a smaller upper mirror plate and continue down both sides of the main rectangular plate, terminating in richly carved scrolling ornaments at the lower corners. The warm, softly aged gilding is particularly attractive, with the natural variations, rubbing and darker passages acquired over time giving considerable depth to the carving. Rather than appearing uniformly restored, the surface retains the character and patina expected of an antique decorative piece. At 155 cm high and 101 cm wide, this is a substantial statement mirror. Its openwork carving gives it an unusually light and animated silhouette despite its scale, making it particularly effective above a console or commode, as illustrated in the interior photograph. The mirror was previously offered by the Paris auction house Cazo, where it was catalogued as a “miroir à fronton en bois doré, à décor de feuilles d’acanthe, fleurettes, coquilles”. A subsequent opinion from Academia Fine Art considers it a well-made late-19th/early-20th-century interpretation of an 18th-century Venetian mirror. Condition: Good antique condition, consistent with age. The gilt surface shows scattered wear, rubbing, small losses and age-related marks, all visible in the detailed photographs. The reverse displays the historic construction, backing and later/old securing elements.
