This rectangular ceramic tile panel was produced by Minton's Art-Pottery Studio in Kensington Gore and features a design by Henry Stacy Marks. The piece depicts The Lover, a scene from the Shakespearean series The Seven Ages of Man. The hand-painted and gilded composition shows a Renaissance-style youth in a blue tunic and cap standing between heraldic gateposts, holding a letter, with a lute resting nearby and two storks in the foreground. The sky is finished with bright gold leaf highlights over an underglaze or enamel painted landscape. The reverse of the ceramic substrate bears the printed circular mark MINTONS Art-Pottery STUDIO Kensington Gore and an impressed mark with the letters A and D over the date 1872. Additional handwritten and impressed production numbers including 5/8 are present on the back. The tile is housed in a wide, black-painted stepped wooden frame.
