Ming Dynasty Green-Glazed Pottery Attendant Figure - Tomb Mingqi

Ming Dynasty Green-Glazed Pottery Attendant Figure - Tomb Mingqi

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty. A standing attendant rises with quiet dignity, his long robe washed in the cool lead-green glaze that distinguishes Ming funerary sculpture. Molded earthenware gives the figure his sturdy presence: hands clasped before the chest in a posture of deferential service, the body draped in heavy folds that cascade to the feet in crisp vertical pleats. The face, left in cool white slip with delicately inked brows, eyes, and a wisp of beard, is crowned by a russet cap that lends warm contrast to the verdant drapery. Such figures, modeled as mingqi (spirit goods), were arrayed within tombs to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife, a retinue of perpetual servants ensuring comfort and status beyond death. The attendant embodies the Ming preoccupation with replicating the ordered hierarchies of earthly life underground. Lead-glazed earthenware figures of this type belong to the long Chinese tradition of mingqi, surrogate objects buried in lieu of living retainers, a practice softened from the human and animal sacrifices of high antiquity. Ming tomb assemblages often deployed processions of such attendants, grooms, musicians, and guardians, their glaze palette of green, amber, and straw recalling the sancai tradition of the Tang while adopting the more restrained two- and three-color schemes typical of the later dynasty. The cool lead-green derives from copper oxide fired at low temperature; the unglazed, slip-painted face was a deliberate convention, allowing fine brushwork to convey individualized expression that glaze could not.
