MILITARIA. Sapeurs-Pompiers Firefighter Helmet

A vintage 19th-century French Sapeurs-Pompiers brass firefighter helmet, Model 1852 pattern, identified to the municipal fire brigade of Bailleul, northern France. The helmet features a large embossed brass front plate decorated with traditional French fire-service motifs, including crossed axes, a flaming grenade, foliage and a banner inscribed, "Srs POMPIERS DE BAILLEUL." Fitted with a high decorative brass comb surmounted by chenille and a separate red feather plume mounted in the side plume holder, consistent with formal or parade wear. The helmet retains its interlocking brass chin strap with scales. From a Kent, CT estate. Dimensions: item measures approx. 11" in length. Condition: Overall with age-related wear, patination and expected losses to the hair and feather plume.
