Imperial German Sg 84/98 n.A. (Seitengewehr 84/98 neuer Art) bayonet, featuring a single-edged blade with a full-length fuller. The ricasso is marked on one side with the maker’s mark of Möve-Werke Walter & Co., Mühlhausen in Thüringen, and on the opposite side with the mark of F. Herder A.S.N., Solingen (Friedr. Herder Abr. Sohn). The blade spine bears the Imperial German inspection and proof marks, including the crowned royal cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia and the date 1916. The bayonet is fitted with a wood grip. The scabbard bears the manufacturer’s code S/155, attributed to E. & F. Hörster Waffenfabrik, Solingen, together with the letter G and serial number 2686. The S-code system was used to conceal manufacturers’ identities on German military equipment; the letter suffix formed part of the production-date coding system. These markings are distinct from the bayonet’s 1916 Imperial German markings. Accompanied by a later-associated steel scabbard bearing the manufacturer’s code S/155, attributed to E. & F. Hörster Waffenfabrik, Solingen, together with the letter G and serial number 2686. The scabbard is a later addition and is not represented as original to the 1916-dated bayonet AND a later-pattern leather bayonet frog stamped REINHOLD ADAM / MAINZ / 1934. From a Harrison, NY estate. Dimensions: blade measures approx. 10". Condition: Condition commensurate with age and use, with surface wear and imperfections throughout.
