All auctions / Medals, Arms & Armor / MILITARIA. Exceptional Japanese O-suriage Katana

Japanese Suriage Blade with Signed Matching Koshirae. The blade exhibiting significant suriage, with three nakago remaining and a partial signature present on the tang, together with a kakinagashi-style groove. The blade was most likely originally a battlefield tachi. The blade is accompanied by an exceptionally well-matched suite of koshirae, apparently executed by the same maker in the same dark-colored metal, with extensive gold accents and a unified aquatic theme. The tsuba is an exceptionally crafted signed shibuichi? example, most surely made by Mitsufumi depicting powerful breaking waves in high relief, with three gold foil-covered sekigane plugs, one of which is missing. The waves are further accented with small gold details, creating a dramatic contrast against the dark ground. The tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and kojiri are all of matching material and workmanship, forming a particularly cohesive set. The mounting further retains two gold foil-wrapped seppa and a gilt koshirae-style habaki. The menuki are finely formed as a composition of mixed marine shells, including clams and conches, reinforcing the aquatic subject. The ensemble is completed by a black lacquered sendan-kizami saya. Cutting edge measure approx. 23.375" in length and over all blade length is 30.75 Condition: Wear commensurate with service and age. Kurigata is not attached but is present.
