MIDUNDEL (LILY) KARADADA, Wandjina, 1999

MIDUNDEL L KARADADA Pitjarintjin/Wunambal languages, c.1921 - 2026 Wandjina, 1999 ochre and acrylic on bark 120 x 70 cm inscribed verso: Wandjina (Rain Spirit), 120x70, 10.5.99, N-0758-LK PROVENANCE Narrangunny Art Traders, Western Australia, Cat No. N-0758-LK Private Collection, Western Australia Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Narrangunny Art Traders In 2026 Midundel (Lily Karadada) sadly passed away at the age of 105. This detailed depiction of the Wandjina is an outstanding example of her work. The Wandjina are ancestral spirits associated with rain, clouds and the creation of Country in the cultural traditions of the Wunambal, Ngarinyin and Worrorra peoples of the north-west Kimberley region of Western Australia. Their images have been represented for generations in rock shelters and on sandstone formations throughout the coastal and hinterland regions, forming an enduring part of the region's cultural and spiritual landscape. Within the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming), Wandjina are understood to have emerged from the clouds, bringing rain and shaping the landscape before returning to the sky or becoming embedded within the land and its rock formations. Their imagery expresses the continuing relationship between ancestral beings, Country and the seasonal cycles that sustain life. In this painting, the central Wandjina figure is surrounded by representations of bush foods and animals, including banarr (bush turkey), woolmara (turtle) and ligulu (lizard). Together, these elements evoke the abundance of Kimberley Country and the interconnected relationships between ancestral spirits, animals and the natural environment. © LILY KARADADA / Copyright Agency, 2026
