Michel MANZI (1849–1915) Portrait of Paul Lafond in Profile Pastel on paper, 30.5 x 25 cm Provenance: - Gros Delettrez Auction, December 14, 2018 Exhibition: - *Portraits inédits*, exhibition catalog, Bordeaux-Albi, 1997, no. 36, reprinted on p. 103 Paul Lafond (Rouen 1847–Pau 1918), an engraver and art historian, became curator of the Pau Museum in 1900. He socialized with Degas along with his friend Manzi, as shown in this atmospheric print of the studio on Rue Forest: “Manzi as a hussar wearing a Basque beret, which he styles in an Italian manner. Lafond, by the fire, pretends to have no commissions. ‘People are asking after you,’ he wrote to Barthomomé. Degas depicted him around 1878–80 as an art lover alongside another enthusiast in a painting now housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art Paul Lafond would go on to author several art books published by Manzi and Joyant, on Velázquez and Goya. He published numerous articles in the journal *Les Arts* from 1902 to 1918
