Mexico, Guerrero. Latin America, Mexico, Guerrero, ca. mid-20th century CE. A carved and polychrome wood and plaster mask fashioned as the face of a jaguar, its muzzle and cheeks scattered with black markings. Bristles sprout from the snout as whiskers, mirrored eyes catch the light, and jagged boar's teeth line the gaping mouth. Made for the Danza del Tigre, a Guerrero performance descended from ancient Mesoamerican rites in which the jaguar, revered symbol of power and the wild, is hunted and subdued. Worn over the face and mounted here on a custom stand. Item # 203653
