MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE. Letter on the letterhead of the Diocese - Lot 404

MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE. Letter on the letterhead of the Diocese of NANCY, Sent from Nancy on June 16, 1814, addressed to the Marquis d’OSMOND (Antoine Eustache d’OSMOND, Bishop of NANCY and TOUL (1754–1823)), Rue Neuve des Mathurins in Paris. Among other things, the letter discusses the coronation of Louis XVIII: “I do not wish, my dear friend, to leave you for a moment in the anxiety I may have caused you yesterday, due to the absence (without apparent reason) of our poor Rosalie… We would like my nephew to be able to stay at least in Metz or Stenay, the two other quarters currently assigned to the Hussars, into whose ranks the disbanded regiment is being incorporated. Perhaps Mr. de Vaublanc will have enough influence to secure this small privilege from General Lacoste…. Indeed, the commissioners were quickly recalled, for ours left this morning. I believe that, on the whole, this is a wise measure, despite my personal regret—which I acknowledge—at the loss of Count Roger, who had initially been appointed Governor-General of Lorraine and who will at least remain a loyal knight and a very kind young man: he is delighted to be going back to his parents, and on his way there he is passing through Cirey. Alas, will the commissioners in Saint-Domingue do anything about it? I hope so, for a thousand reasons. I do not expect the issue of the mines to be resolved anytime soon, since no council has been established. Is it true that the KING is to be CORONATED on AUGUST 25? Where will it take place? I cannot imagine that for this ceremony they will, as in NAPOLEONIC times, stage a grand episcopal procession—yet it would take nothing less than that to draw me from my august retreat. If a new treaty is drawn up with the Pope, I imagine it will be only to make a few additions or amendments to the Concordat of 1801. Tell me: do you believe (we have fools who pride themselves on this) that the restitution of the forests decreed in favor of landowners in general could be applied—that is, to ecclesiastical life tenants as well? I don’t believe it for a moment. It would certainly be no less just, but it seems impossible to me. There is enough here to provide the bishop and the chapter with a very decent endowment. The one in Metz would be far richer. Warm regards to all… If the dear General writes to me, I will thank him, for his letters are very friendly toward me: my sister is quite pleased with this kind treatment.
