Presentation copy, inscribed by Cauchy, of a rare early paper on calculus. “After complaining half-heartedly that his first 'Mémoire sur les intégrales définies', presented to the Institut in August 1814, had still not been published (it would not appear until 1827 [ie, the larger-scale "Mémoire sur les intégrales définies" published by the Institut de France]), Cauchy states in this paper that the importance of the results to which his new methods lead prompts him to ‘show the full extent to which they can be developed and [to] indicate their principal consequences.’” (Pire, “Théorèmes des intégrales de Cauchy”).
