All auctions / Ancient Art / Medieval, Crusaders Era Roman Lead Tesserae Fibula - Pseudocoin / penny

From our own collection. Pseudomint / medallion in lead-tin with a classical-looking bust. Coin-shaped medallion in lead/tin with a stylized bust, possibly a portrait of a woman. The depiction is surrounded by concentric circles and a decorative rim of beads and short strokes. There is no clearly legible inscription recognizable. The portrait recalls classical coin portraits. However, an identification as a Roman woman or empress has not been established. The item appears cast; the precise dating, origin and original function are unknown. Material: lead/tin, as stated. Dating: unknown; possibly inspired by a classical coin portrait. Condition: surface weathering, encrustation and localized loss of detail. The portrait and the surrounding ornament are recognizable. See the photos for your own assessment.. Comparative material: the British Museum houses Roman lead tokens with busts, including inventory number 1922,0416.62, published as BMCRLT 924. This reference is for general comparison and does not constitute confirmation of the type or age of the offered specimen. Field find.
