Medieval Bronze Jerusalem Bronze Talismanic Pendant –...

Small treasures bearing the traces of history Medieval Jerusalem Bronze Talismanic Pendant – Symbolism of Protection against the Evil Eye and Magic Description Considered within the talismanic tradition of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, this bronze pendant bears engraved decoration on both faces, reflecting beliefs in personal protection. Dated approximately to the 12th–15th centuries, its rectangular body, narrowed neck and pierced suspension lug form a compact amulet suitable for wearing around the neck. One face is divided into nine geometric compartments containing letter-like signs. The opposite face presents a contrasting arrangement of curved and angular engravings enclosed within a border. These markings are interpreted as talismanic characters and protective symbols; their precise reading remains unresolved. The compartmental composition nevertheless gives the pendant a distinctive symbolic character. Protection against the evil eye, magic, misfortune and accidents forms the belief framework within which the object is interpreted. In archaeological terminology, this protective meaning is described as apotropaic and relates to its interpretation as a personal amulet. Dark surface patina contrasts with lighter brown tones along the engraved lines, bringing out the decoration. The preserved body, suspension lug and markings on both faces retain the pendant’s overall form. Combining two decorative arrangements within a small object, it offers an engaging example for collectors interested in historical talismans and objects of personal belief.
