Medieval silver alloy cross pendant with slightly flaring arms and straight terminals. The front is embellished with engraved parallel lines bordered by rows of closely spaced punched marks, creating a symmetrical geometric design that follows the contours of the cross. The pendant is fitted with an elongated, integral suspension loop which allowed the cross to be worn on a cord or chain. The reverse is plain and retains visible traces of manufacture and use. -> Cross pendants were worn throughout the Medieval period as personal expressions of Christian faith. In addition to their devotional significance, they may also have been regarded as protective objects. Size: ± 43 x 26.4 mm Good solid condition, wearable. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics. Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material. Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
