Mechelse kapstok met karakteristieke haken - Coat rack...

Antique Mechelen wall coat rack – Richly carved oak – Lion heads with rings – 6 double hooks – Circa 1900–1930 A splendid piece of Flemish furniture tradition with character, artisanal appearance and particularly beautiful woodcarving! This imposing antique wall coat rack is executed in the characteristic Mechelen style and combines a warm, dark patinated wood colour with richly worked ornaments and graceful metal fittings. The broad back panel features beautifully carved floral motifs, graceful volutes and a central ornament in the shape of a classic vase. The symmetric composition gives the whole a stately and balanced look. Particularly striking are the two finely carved lion heads on either side, each with a large brass-coloured ring in the mouth. These form a striking decorative accent and are very characteristic of traditional Mechelen furniture. Under the wood carving are six elegantly curved double metal coat hooks with decorative mounting plates. The top is finished with a continuous wooden upper shelf, ideal for hats, gloves or other accessories. Historical background The Mechelen furniture style originates from the rich furniture and woodcarving tradition of Mechelen, Belgium. From the 19th century, this style developed from historical Flemish Renaissance furniture into a recognizable furniture tradition, characterized by robust wooden constructions, richly ornate carving and characteristic lion heads with metal rings. This coat rack fits beautifully with that history thanks to its pronounced decorations, symmetrical design and traditional fittings. A particularly atmospheric piece of furniture for a classic hallway, country interior, manor house, or an interior in which antique and modern blend together. Features * Type: antique wall coat rack / wardrobe rack. * Style: Mechelan (Mechels), Flemish Renaissance Revival. * Likely period: circa 1900–1930. * Material: presumably oak with metal fittings. * Finish: warm, dark brown wood patina. * Richly carved floral ornaments and central vase motif. * Two carved lion heads with large brass-coloured rings. * Six double metal coat hooks. * Continuous wooden top shelf. * Decorative and functional hall furniture. Condition The coat rack is in a beautiful, authentically seasoned state with signs of use and aging that suit its age. The wood has previously been attacked by woodworm. The coat rack has now been treated against woodworm. Traces of the former damage may still be visible. The wood and metal fittings have a fine old patina that contributes to the historical look of the whole. A characterful antique coat rack that is not only practical but also serves as a decorative wall piece beautifully. A true eye-catcher for lovers of historical furniture and traditional Flemish woodcarving.
