Italian manufacture coffee and dessert service: 12 coffee cups / 12 saucers and 12 dessert plates and a coffee pot and a sugar bowl and a milk jug / total 39 pieces / This magnificent service by Ernestine Salerno is made of earthenware (a porous ceramic body, covered with an impermeable glaze), often described by ceramic art collectors as Italian art ceramics. The Salerno manufactory was renowned for its particular technique: • The base: A local earthenware chosen for its lightness compared with traditional industrial earthenwares. • The finish: A glaze (here in a monochrome cream/ivory shade) that gives this smooth, slightly glossy appearance. Ernestine Salerno’s earthenware is especially valued for its artisanal, authentic look, but it remains more susceptible to impact than porcelain. Hence the cups are 7 cm tall, the saucers 14 cm in length, and the dessert plates 20 cm in diameter.
