UPS or others Weaving Velvet is a fabric that on the face side presents either a dense pile (united or cut velvet) or a series of tiny loops of thread (crushed velvet). The name derives from the Latin vellus, meaning fleece, indicating the characteristic of a fur-like covering, of varying length and type. Its origin is Western and it is estimated to have occurred around the 13th century. In Italy, it became widely used among the wealthy around the 14th century and was primarily produced in Lucca, Genoa, Florence, Venice, and Catanzaro. It is produced on a loom with very fine threads using two warp threads, one for the base (coarse warp) and one for the pile (pile warp), and a single weft. The loom for velvet must be equipped with two combers, one for the coarse warp and one for the pile warp, which must have a length much greater than the other, as the pile fibers have to travel a longer path around the pegs. It can be made from natural fibers or acrylics. The most valued is velvet obtained from silk, although today it is rarely produced.
