MAST FORK Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region 20th century Wood with a marine patina, natural cracks, and signs of wear and tear from use H. 144.3 cm – W. 26.6 cm Provenance: - Collected in the Massim region by Dr. Harry Beran around 1990. The mast fork of the open-sea canoe, or sawasu, is a rare piece of ship’s hardware. Here, it is anthropomorphic in shape with a carved face at the top; the fork serves to hold the mast upright and also functions as a cleat for the halyard.
