Mary Magdalene as a penitent, Spanish school, 17th century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 156 x 107 / 168 x 120 cm. A large composition depicting Mary Magdalene as a penitent, semi-nude and lost in contemplative ecstasy, accompanied by the traditional attributes of vanitas and penance: a skull, a cross, a jar of ointments, and a scroll or phylactery suspended in the air. The figure stands out powerfully against a dark background, while her flowing hair, softly illuminated anatomy, and the intense interplay of blue and red drapery reinforce the emotional impact of the scene. The work reflects the sensual and spiritual drama of the 17th-century Baroque, where physical beauty becomes a vehicle for conversion and meditation on the fleeting nature of life. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
