He led in 1896 and 1897 the very first successful crossing of the interior of Spitsbergen Island. The French connection: The renowned French geographer and polar researcher Charles Rabot (whose name is still associated with the Rabot Glacier on Spitsbergen) translated Conway's texts, shortened them, and provided scientific context for the French audience.
