Bir al Jahmah 002 (BaJ 002) 31.198787, 21.878896 Ajdabiya, Libya Purchased: 2026 Apr Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: The meteorite was found by meteorite hunters during a search in the Bir al Jahmah DCA of Libya and subsequently purchased by Ali Muftha. Physical characteristics: Many gray-light green fragments partly covered with fresh black fusion crust. Several vesicles are exposed at the surface. Petrography: The meteorite is composed of up to 5 mm-sized pigeonite crystals with pronounced Ca-rich rims often enclosing smaller olivine chadacrysts set in a microgabbroic matrix dominated by ferroan olivine (about 38 vol%), finely exsolved pigeonite (about 34 vol%), maskelynite (about 26 vol%), and rare augite. Olivines frequently contain magmatic inclusions. Minor phases (about 2 vol%) include merrillite, ilmenite, chromite, Ti-bearing chromite, and troilite. Contains shock melt pockets. Geochemistry: Olivine chadacrysts: Fa35.5±0.4 (Fa35.0-36.3, FeO/MnO=46±1; n=7); pigeonite oikocrysts core: Fs24.8±0.1Wo8.2±0.1 (Fs24.7-25.1Wo8.1-8.2, FeO/MnO=26±1, n=7); augite oikocrysts rim: Fs17.1±0.2Wo33.7±0.1 (Fs16.9-17.4Wo33.4-33.8, FeO/MnO=23±1, n=7); olivine in matrix: Fa40.8±0.3 (Fa40.3-41.1, FeO/MnO=48±1; n=7); pigeonite in matrix: Fs30.2±0.6Wo10.2±1.1 (Fs29.3-31.1Wo8.7-11.6, FeO/MnO=28±1, n=7); augite in matrix: Fs18.5±0.3Wo32.4±0.6 (Fs18.2-18.9Wo31.7-33.2, FeO/MnO=24±1, n=7);maskelynite (An45.0-57.2Ab40.9-50.1Or1.9-4.9, n=7) Classification: Martian (shergottite, poikilitic) Shock stage: high.
