"Sponsa et Sponsus" presents a sixteenth-century allegorical study capturing a seated female figure representing the bride receiving a branch from Christ beneath a fruit-bearing tree. The broad composition integrates various historical and biblical figures including Moses holding the tablets of the law and a classical soldier standing amongst a crowd of onlookers. Marten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draughtsman of the late Renaissance period renowned for his prolific designs for prints and grand altarpieces.
