Marolles (Michel de) Le Livre des Peintres et Graveurs..., edited by Georges Duplessis, number 1 of only 2 copies printed on vellum, from an edition limited to 572, woodcut initials and head- & tail-pieces (one hand-coloured in red & gold), one leaf lightly soiled, armorial bookplate of Michael Tomkinson, contemporary brown morocco, spine titled in gilt with five raised bands, inner gilt dentelles, g.e., one corner very slightly bumped, 8vo, Paris, Paul Daffis, 1872. *** Marolles (1600-81), abbot of Villeloin and man of letters, was the foremost print collector of 17th century France (see previous two lots). This long poem serves as a sort of memoir of his life as a collector and connoisseur. The extensive notes and index by Duplessis provide a useful guide to the artists and collectors of the 17th century.
