Marius Sepet - Jeanne d'Arc — Superbe cartonnage éditeur - 1891

19th-century reference work devoted to the Maid of Orléans, presented in its splendid publisher’s binding in red percaline by Alfred Mame & Fils. Written by Marius Sepet, historian and former resident pupil of the École des Chartes, this book traces with rigor and fervor the life, the epic, and the trial of Joan of Arc. It is the third revised edition of this major work from the late 19th-century movement of historical interest in the heroine. The work benefits from a remarkable wood engraving by F. Méaulle, after the great artistic figures of the time: E. Fremiet, J.-P. Laurens, Barrias, E. Le Blant, E. Luminais, A. Maignan, Rochegrosse, Zier, etc. Presence of the frontispiece and a carefully produced edition. ** Binding and exterior appearance - Magnificent publisher’s binding in original red percaline. - Front board: important cold-stamped and gold-decorated design, depicting Joan of Arc on horseback in armor against a palm background, framed by neo-Gothic motifs and fleur-de-lis. - Spine: richly adorned with gold-embossed devices, the title and vegetal/heraldic motifs. - Edges: fully gilt, preserving a very beautiful shine. - Back board: framing of black rules and corner rosettes. ** Condition - Binding: generally good. Minor, discreet signs of wear on the hinges, headcaps, and corners. Main board bright with fresh gilding. - Interior: solid and well bound. Period paper well preserved, with scattered foxing and small marginal stains that do not affect the readability of the texts or the quality of the engravings. A very fine collectible copy, ideal for lovers of French history, of Joan of Arc iconography, or of beautiful Mame bindings from the 19th century. Fast and careful shipping
