Mario Cortiello (1907-1982) Snowy Mountain Landscape Oil on canvas Oil on canvas signed by Mario Cortiello and dated 1951, depicting a snow-covered mountain landscape with small rural buildings integrated into the valley. The work presents a broad, luminous composition, dominated by whites, grays, blues, and soft earth tones typical of a winter scene. The painting sits within mid-20th-century European landscape painting, with a loose, expressive facture, close to a post-impressionist sensibility. The artist does not seek a minute description of the landscape, but an atmospheric interpretation of the surroundings, based on light, chromatic vibrancy, and the synthesis of forms. The mountains appear treated with wide, fluid brushstrokes, while the houses, bare trees, and roads are suggested with agile and confident strokes. Special emphasis is placed on the treatment of snow, resolved with a nuanced palette in which whites are enriched with blueish, violet, greenish, and ochre reflections. This chromatic richness avoids the scene’s uniform coldness and adds depth to the whole. The mountain and valley areas are articulated through soft contrasts, creating a sense of vastness and winter silence. The composition has a pronounced decorative and poetic quality. The bare trees in the foreground introduce vertical rhythm and depth, while the small reddish and ochre buildings provide warm focal points within the overall cool range. The result is a balanced work, with a serene atmosphere, combining landscape interest with a modern, spontaneous execution. The work is signed at the bottom left: Mario Cortiello, with place and date indicated, 1951. The condition can be assessed from the photographs that form part of the description. It is recommended to carefully review the images to evaluate the overall state of the painting and frame. It is presented in a light-toned wooden frame with a gilded edge, in keeping with the artwork’s aesthetics. The frame is included as a gift along with the painting. A decorative and collectible piece of interest, especially attractive to lovers of mountain landscapes, European mid-20th-century painting, and winter scenes executed with a luminous and expressive approach.
