All auctions / Miscellaneous / Marinus Bies (1894-1975) - Haven

This atmospheric and characterful painting depicts a lively harbor scene, where several moored sailing ships and smaller vessels come together against the backdrop of urban buildings. The artist has created a particularly atmospheric composition with loose, bold brushwork and a harmonious color palette of warm browns, ochres, and greenish grays. The tall ship masts establish a rhythmic line pattern and give the work a strong vertical dynamism, while the dark hulls and the subtle reflections in the water add depth and liveliness. Noteworthy is the sketchy treatment of the architecture and the craft, with a few decisive brushstrokes capturing the activity and character of the harbor. The visible brushwork and the beautiful interplay of light and shadow enhance the authentic, somewhat nostalgic atmosphere of the scene. The painting exudes the mood of a traditional Dutch harbor and testifies to a remarkable sense of composition, light, and the picturesque beauty of maritime life. Executed in oil on panel. Signed lower right Dimensions of the work approx. 17 x 25 cm; with frame approx. 37 × 45 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Artist biography Marinus Bies (Aarle-Rixtel, 1894–1975), full name Martinus Johannes Bies, was a Dutch painter and draftsman whose oeuvre is closely linked to the Brabant landscape and, in particular, the Peel. He studied under Arnold Marc Gorter and Jan Kruysen and developed a powerful, freely painted visual language in which landscape, color, and atmosphere are central. From 1933 he worked as a professional artist. In 1938 and 1939 Bies participated in group exhibitions; during this period the Van Abbemuseum acquired a Peel landscape by him. His work was subsequently exhibited at the Rijksmuseum as well. On the occasion of his hundredth birth anniversary, Museum Kempenland Eindhoven organized an exhibition of his oeuvre in 1994. In 2025 his fiftieth death anniversary in the Peel region was commemorated with a series of exhibitions in which his landscape art was central.
