Marinus Bies (1894-1975) - Boerderijlandschap

Marinus Bies (1894-1975) - Boerderijlandschap

This atmospheric landscape painting depicts an idyllic farmyard, where traditional farms with dark thatched roofs and a characteristic hay barn come together in a wide, rural scene. In the foreground a shallow water body reflects the soft hues of the sky, while the modest presence of a mill in the distance reinforces the rural character. The artist has, with loose, impressionistic brushwork and a harmonious palette of earthy brown, green, and ochre tones, managed to create a particularly tranquil atmosphere. The expansive, lightly clouded sky occupies a large portion of the composition and provides a wonderful sense of space and depth. The subtle interplay of light and shadow, combined with the refined depiction of the rural buildings, gives the work a timeless appearance. The painting forms a atmospheric tribute to traditional farm life and the rustic beauty of the Dutch countryside. Executed in oil on canvas Dimensions: approximately 39 × 53 cm; with frame approximately 50 × 63 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Frame in poor condition Biographies of the artist Marinus Bies (Aarle-Rixtel, 1894–1975), full name Martinus Johannes Bies, was a Dutch painter and draftsman whose œuvre is closely connected with the Brabant landscape and in particular the Peel. He was a pupil of Arnold Marc Gorter and Jan Kruysen and developed a powerful, freely painted visual language in which landscape, color and atmosphere are central. From 1933 he worked as a professional artist. In 1938 and 1939 Bies participated in group exhibitions; during this period the Van Abbemuseum acquired a Peellandschap by him. His work was subsequently also exhibited in the Rijksmuseum. To mark his hundredth birth anniversary, Museum Kempenland Eindhoven organized an exhibition around his oeuvre in 1994. In 2025 his fiftieth death anniversary in the Peel region was commemorated with a series of exhibitions in which his landscape art was central.
