Beautiful painting on strong cardboard depicting a Breton seascape at sunset, where a few sailboats with white sails stand out against a vast expanse of water bathed in golden light. In the foreground, a cluster of rocks in violet and purple tones forms a striking contrast with the luminous yellows, oranges and turquoise hues of the sea and sky. The work is distinguished by vigorous knife work, particularly expressive in the treatment of the rocks, built up by generous impasto. The thick, fragmented strokes, blending violet, mauve, midnight blue and touches of white, give the foreground a remarkable physical presence. In contrast, the sea and sky are treated with finer, horizontal strokes, in a succession of delicately blended shades that suggest the flicker of light at the end of the day. The composition rests on a bold chromatic opposition between the warm tones of the sunset and the cold, almost unreal, colors of the rocks. This freedom in the use of color evokes a post-impressionist and Fauvist sensibility, where the search for visual emotion takes precedence over naturalistic representation. The small sailboats, reduced to a few pale touches on the horizon, bring depth and poetry to this marine scene. Painting on strong cardboard, signed at the bottom right, presented in a gilded molded frame with black fillets, whose classical character elegantly underscores the modernity of the colors. Close-up photographs allow appreciating the texture of the impasto and the handling of the material.
