Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) The Red Sun Watercolour and ink on paper Signature: artist’s studio seal “Marcus de Vestele / Atelier de l’artiste” Dimensions: 51.5 × 36.5 cm Sold unframed Condition: good overall. Thin sheet, pale paper, restrained colours. Small isolated ochre stain at the bottom right, not affecting readability. Provenance: artist Marcus de Vestele’s studio. Description: Watercolour with ink and wash. On the left, two standing figures, grey and black lines, one with a round head, the other with a beak, like a bird perched on the shoulder. At their feet, a black mass, beast or reclining body, opened by a yellow wash. In the center, a large ochre red disk, sun or fruit, set alone in the void of the paper. On the right, a yellow silhouette, skull-like head, leaning on a long grey staff. The background remains bare. No place is described: three presences, a stain, and the paper. Quick ink, broad washes, white reserves in the disk. Direct gesture, figures barely held, in Cobra’s restrained primitive figuration. Sheet coming directly from the studio. Biography: Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist known first as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in the Bardiglio. Parallel to this, he pursued a lifelong practice on paper, long kept in the studio and now sought after. Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he retains the rough figure, spontaneous line, and the tension between body and abstraction. This watercolour is an example: ink and wash, figures held more by colour than by drawing.
