A volume illustrating this vibrant encounter between Pagnol’s southern theatre and the exuberant graphic imagination of Dubout, giving birth to a book in which popular tenderness and visual caricature intertwine in a celebration of language and line. Second part of the Marseilles trilogy (Marius, Fanny, César), Fanny continues the story of thwarted love between Fanny and Marius, set against a harbor, family, and social-morality backdrop— Abandoned by Marius who has gone to sea, Fanny discovers she is pregnant and agrees to marry the shopkeeper Panisse to save her honor and provide a father for her child— Pagnol’s text, written in living, warm, musical language, blends humor, emotion, and popular wisdom, embodying the soul of Marseille and the complexity of human feelings— Jean Dubout, with his bustling and burlesque graphic style, illustrates this dramatic comedy by accentuating the characters’ features — mustaches, paunches, outraged stares — and filling the margins with secondary figures, picturesque settings, and visual winks— Excellent interior condition, the volume enriched with beautiful color-illustrated engravings hors-texte by Dubout including a frontispiece, clean text, fresh interior, a fine copy.
