Marc R. Hanson (American, b. 1955). "Greens and Reflections" oil on canvas, 2008. Signed and dated at lower right and titled on verso. A tranquil river edged by luminous trees unfolds in "Greens and Reflections," a meditation in layered foliage and softened light that captures Marc R. Hanson's deep affinity for the natural world. The composition centers on a quiet body of water whose surface mirrors the pale sky and the dense stands of trees rising along its banks. Hanson builds the scene through nuanced variations of green - olive, sap, moss, and deep forest tones - allowing the eye to move from the darker foreground water into the airy middle ground where trunks and branches dissolve into atmosphere. The trees are loosely articulated yet structurally sound, their forms suggested through confident, economical brushwork that conveys both mass and movement. Size of painting: 19.5" W x 13.5" H (49.5 cm x 34.3 cm); of frame: 25" W x 19" H (63.5 cm x 48.3 cm) Light is handled with restraint. A silvery patch at the center of the water reflects the sky above, acting as a visual anchor and drawing the viewer inward. The distant tree line softens into a cool haze, reinforcing depth without sacrificing the intimacy of the setting. Rather than dramatizing the landscape, Hanson invites contemplation, focusing on the quiet interplay between surface and reflection. Hanson has described himself as a naturalist at heart, and this painting embodies that sensibility. The landscape becomes a vehicle for expressing his joy in the world around him, but it is equally an exploration of core painterly principles - value relationships, color harmony, and compositional balance. The restrained palette and thoughtful orchestration of dark and light reveal an artist deeply engaged with the discipline of representational painting. Painted in 2008, "Greens and Reflections" demonstrates the maturity of an artist who has devoted decades to refining his craft. The work communicates not only a specific place, but a state of mind - calm, attentive, and reverent toward the subtle beauty of trees gathered at water's edge. Item # 200885
