Title: Gestural Abstract Composition Technique: ink on paper Artist: Manuel VIOLA (1916-1987) Year: 1961 Artwork format: 16.8 x 23.4 cm Condition: Good condition Manuel Viola, whose real name is Manuel Viola Gamón, is a Spanish painter. He was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1916. From a young age, he showed an interest in poetry, literature, and the arts. He began to paint in a context marked by the avant-gardes. The Spanish Civil War upheaved his life and forced him into exile. He left for France in the late 1930s. In Paris, he associated with artists and encountered Surrealism. He subsequently turned to abstraction and gestural painting. In 1949, he returned to Spain to pursue his artistic career. He settled mainly in Madrid, where he worked and exhibited. In 1957, he joined a group of artists called El Paso. This group contributed to the renewal of contemporary Spanish art. His paintings are characterized by bright colors and energetic gestures. He later resided in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, near Madrid. Manuel Viola died in this town in 1987, leaving behind an important body of work.
