Of Malick Sidibé's work, one first knows the documentary photographs, taken at surprise parties organized by young people fond of music and freedom as the country prepares for independence. In 1962, he opens the “Studio Malick” in Bamako. The studio portraiture will constitute the major part of his work. People come from everywhere to have their portrait taken by the eye of Bamako… Noticed at the first Rencontres de la Photographie de Bamako, he is exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, then in the great galleries and museums of the world.
