Magnificent bronze mortar from the 17th century with its pestle, attributed to the Master of Provins – active 1680 to 1740 in Rouen – France. The mortar is in perfect proportions, without buttresses. It is adorned with heads of angels and feminine masks in groups of three, and the flared neck is enhanced with star-shaped studs; a recurring motif in the artist's production. Perfect condition, no cracks or losses, very beautiful dark patina, and the mortar rings clearly like a bell. Matching pestle. Several examples of the same type are kept at the Musée de Provins and the Provinois. A very beautiful piece for a collection. The mortar weighs 0.898 kg, with a height of 7.3 cm, a diameter of 11.2 cm and a base diameter of 7.1 cm. Pestle of 18 cm for 459 g. Total 1.357 kg (2.99 pounds). From a private collection.
