The work centers on the idea of the threshold. A blue line that operates simultaneously as branch and horizon establishes a disjunction between thought and body, between who remembers and the place remembered. In front of it, the dog functions as an affective counterpoint: a mute bond, prior to language, that concentrates the only explicit relationship in the scene. Thus, Sotomayor constructs a landscape that is not observed but remembered, where the territory already appears transfigured by time and distance, and where the figure takes on the condition of witness more than protagonist. Formally, the work dialogues with post-impressionist tradition and Caribbean modernity through color plane, emphatic contour, and the frontal presentation of the face, but does so from its own economy and voice. The palette, with complementary contrasts and an emotional temperature more than descriptive, and the deliberately flattened space reinforce memory’s logic as a form of composition. The result is a painting that reconciles chromatic immediacy and conceptual density, and that places the relationship between body, nature, and memory at the center of the artist’s inquiry.
