Italian jewellery design in the 1990s embraced the bold, the colourful , and the self-assured. After the rather austere forms of previous decades, opulent gemstones, striking gold surfaces, and high-contrast colour combinations once again took centre stage. Jewellery was no longer meant to provide subtle accents but to visibly define the wearer’s appearance. This striking set, consisting of a necklace and matching earrings, embodies this ideal in a particularly magnificent way. Large amethysts of intense violet alternate with turquoises of brilliant sky blue. All the coloured gemstones are cut as cabochons, which allows their colours to shine particularly well. The striking colour contrast between violet and turquoise is harmonised by the warm glow of high-carat yellow gold. The set features approximately 30 carats of turquoise and approximately 87 carats of fine amethysts. Set between the coloured gemstones are curved gold links connected by movable joints, set with a total of 66 brilliant-cut diamonds of very good quality. With a total weight of approximately 5.00 ct, they lend the set an impressive sparkle without overshadowing the effect of the large cabochons. The articulated design allows the necklace to drape softly around the neck, bringing the gold and gemstones to life with every movement. The clip-on earrings echo the necklace’s design on a smaller scale: a Persian turquoise forms the upper terminus of each earring, while a diamond-set element below leads to a movably mounted amethyst. The result is a cohesive ensemble whose bold colours, generous proportions, and lavish use of materials unmistakably belong to the world of luxurious Italian jewellery from around 1990. The set was crafted by Filippo Moroni, whose jewellery store has been located on Via Belsiana near Piazza di Spagna in Rome since 1979. The set came to us from a Stuttgart collection of high-calibre designer jewellery.
