M. L'Abbé de Vertot - Histoire des Chevaliers hospitaliers de S

A fascinating exemplar of this masterpiece of ecclesiastical and military history. It presents the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, an order of warrior brothers who dedicated its mission to protecting pilgrims and fighting the infidels - The narrative follows the evolution of an order born from the hospital vocation aimed at welcoming and caring for pilgrims in the Holy Land, before the upheavals of the Crusades gradually led the Hospitallers to become a true military power - After the loss of Christian positions in the East, the order moves to Cyprus, then conquers the island of Rhodes at the beginning of the 14th century, a fundamental step that explains the appellation of “Knights of Rhodes” - The island’s strategic position profoundly changes their role, for Rhodes becomes at once a Christian fortress facing the Muslim powers of the Mediterranean, a military and commercial port, and the seat of a religious and knightly community organized around the Grand Master - M.
