Rare original edition of 1789 of the Essay on the History of the Comitia of Rome, of the Estates-General of France and of the Parliament of England, by Paul-Philippe Gudin de La Brenellerie (1738-1812). Complete set in three volumes, published in Philadelphia and located in Paris, at Maradan, bookseller, rue des Noyers, no. 33, in 1789. A historically and politically interesting work, published in the same year as the French Revolution and the summoning of the Estates-General. The author offers a comparative study of the representative institutions of ancient Rome, the French monarchy and the English Parliament. He develops reflections on political representation, public finances, power and the organization of the state. The publisher’s notice states that the convening of the Estates-General in 1789 accelerated the publication of this work, which gives it particular historical interest.
