Set of four volumes of The History of the French Revolution by Adolphe Thiers, member of the French Academy. Eighth edition, published in Paris in 1839, at the Bureau of Illustrated Publications, 58 Rue de la Harpe. The four volumes feature remarkable antique half-bound bindings, with backs adorned with rich floral and gilt arabesque motifs. Marbled boards and an overall particularly homogeneous appearance. This substantial historical work traces the major events of the French Revolution, its great political and military figures, up to the rise of Bonaparte. Illustrations: Numerous historical engravings and portraits, notably Mirabeau, Marie-Antoinette, Pichegru, and Bonaparte. Presence of the large unfolding map of the theater of war between the Mincio and the Adige, 1796 campaign, kept in the fourth volume. Condition: * Bindings in good overall condition, gilding well preserved. * Interiors showing foxing and browning varying by page. * Engravings clearly legible. * Fold-out map present, with signs of aging and creases from the past. A beautiful historical and decorative set of the 19th century, particularly interesting for enthusiasts of the French Revolution, Napoleonic history, and antique bindings.
