Reference: Album, A Checklist of Islamic Coins, 1874.1. Badr al-Din Lu’lu’ rose from slavery to become regent for the Zengid rulers of Mosul, then established his own dynasty. His reign saw flourishing metalwork, architecture and manuscript production. Through shifting alliances with the Ayyubids and Mongols, he preserved his authority until his death in 1259. His coinage reflects these political relationships through inscriptions naming the caliph and his overlords.
